Organised with Bloomberg and broadcast live on UN Web TV, the candidates' town hall will for the first time set the visions of the contenders for António Guterres's succession side by side. In the race to become the next UN Secretary-General, President Macky Sall will bring a clear vision to it: an inclusive, action-oriented United Nations that listens to every member state.
Four commitments form the platform. The first is an integrated approach to peace, security and development. Next comes a renewed multilateralism faithful to the Charter and its three pillars: peace and security; human rights; sustainable development. The Organisation must be streamlined, able to do better with less, and the method rests on listening to every member state, without exception. To this the candidacy adds a deliberate openness, with a UN that works in partnership with civil society and young people as well as with the private sector.
This is Senegal's candidacy. In a communiqué dated 20 July 2026, the Ministry of African Integration and Foreign Affairs announced the State's full support. The Government and Senegal's entire diplomatic network are mobilised to promote, among member states, a candidacy "in the service of Africa and of a more effective multilateralism". The only African candidate in the race, President Macky Sall entered the contest on 2 March 2026, nominated by Burundi.
In the last week of July, the Security Council is expected to hold its first indicative votes, the traditional step by which the fifteen members gauge support for each candidacy. Six candidacies have been submitted to date.
Africa at its heart, the world in its sights: the words sum up the ambition to bring to the head of the United Nations the experience of a head of state who led his country for twelve years and chaired the African Union. His vision of an inclusive, action-oriented UN now goes before the member states for judgement.
