Senegal extends its full support to President Macky Sall's candidacy for Secretary-General of the United Nations. The decision, taken by the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, was made official in a communiqué from the Ministry of African Integration and Foreign Affairs, issued on 20 July 2026.
The communiqué recalls the setting of the decision. On Friday 17 July, President Macky Sall had been received at the presidential palace in Dakar by the Head of State to discuss his candidacy for the head of the United Nations. The meeting took place in an atmosphere of cordiality and reflected a shared commitment to dialogue, the continuity of the State and unity around the higher interests of the nation.
Following the meeting, the President of the Republic decided that Senegal would extend its full support to the candidacy. He also instructed the Government and Senegal's diplomatic network to mobilize fully to promote the candidacy before the member states of the United Nations.
The gesture closes the one flank the candidacy had left open. Borne since March by Burundi's nomination, the only declared African candidacy in the race, it now advances with the weight of its home country. The continuity of the State prevails over the alternation of power: it is a Senegal united behind one of its own that presents itself to the international community.
The calendar gives this support its full significance. The Security Council's first straw polls are expected in the last week of July; on the 23rd, President Macky Sall will present his vision to all member states. He will do so strengthened by a fresh mandate: that of a country which has chosen to speak with one voice to carry Africa to the heart of the United Nations.
