On 20 July 2026, a communiqué from the Ministry of African Integration and Foreign Affairs made official Senegal's full support for President Macky Sall's candidacy for Secretary-General of the United Nations. The decision was taken by the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The communiqué sets out how the decision came about. On Friday 17 July, President Macky Sall had been received at the presidential palace in Dakar by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to discuss his candidacy for the head of the United Nations. Held in a spirit of dialogue, continuity of the State and unity around the higher interests of the nation, the meeting took place in an atmosphere of cordiality.
At the end of the meeting, the President of the Republic decided that Senegal would give its full support to the candidacy. He also instructed the Government and Senegal's entire diplomatic network to mobilise in promoting the candidacy among the member states of the United Nations.
Dakar thus joins Burundi, which has sponsored since March the only declared African candidacy in the race. The candidacy moves forward with the weight of its home country behind it. Across changes of government, the continuity of the State presents the international community with a Senegal united behind one of its own.
Two deadlines lie ahead. On 23 July, President Macky Sall will present his vision to all member states; the Security Council's first straw polls are expected in the last week of the month. He will go before them with the mandate of a country that has chosen to speak with one voice to carry Africa to the heart of the United Nations.
